Choral Arts Link
Preserving a tradition and discipline of choral development by providing children the opportunity to develop leadership skills, enhance their education, and to grow artistically and professionally.
Is an organization that works to preserve a tradition and discipline of choral development by providing children the opportunity to develop leadership skills, to enhance their education, and to grow
Margaret Campbelle-Holman, Founder and Artistic Director, has been teaching children and teachers for over 40 years. Her vision has always included assisting children to learn and improve their overall quality of life through music. “Music is the one ‘language’ that allows all walks of life to communicate, discover and grow,” says Campbelle-Holman.
The MET Singers is CAL’s signature weekly education program that provides intensive, hands-on music education introducing students grades 2-12 to multiple music traditions, many of which are not often included or taught in-depth in traditional music education curricula. Some traditions that have been and continue to be taught include classical, African American folk hymns (spirituals), origins of barbershop, vocal jazz, circle singing, historic and contemporary a cappella (found across cultures), origins of country music, folk songs of Middle TN cultures, and newly composed songs of culturally diverse composers/songwriters.
Programs and Events
Three culminating, high-quality performances for the community every year:
The Let Freedom Sing is a free community concert with the Nashville Symphony,
Upon These Shoulders is a free community concert with Intersection Contemporary Ensemble.
We Are Nashville is a free community concert
Upon These Shoulders
Theme: Upon These Shoulders A Free community concert. A tribute to those who forged the legacy, an inspiration for those marching ‘the stony road’ today, and a challenge to build strong agape shoulders for tomorrow; for these we lift our voices in song, through instruments and in spoken word. It is set to recognize that while Dr. King was indeed the face of a great social protest, many people “orchestrated” strategies, meetings, sought resources and the like. And, that these unsung heroes/ines, worthy of celebration, were indeed the wind beneath Dr. King’s wings.
It is the arts, in many cases, that breathed energy into the foot soldiers of the movement. We want to share just a few of their artistic footprints: voices in song, portraiture, instruments, photography and spoken word.
MET Academy
This program has three formats: MET Summer Academy is a 1 week- 6 hour/day choral immersion, and MET Academy in the Schools is a one to two-day visit per week for 1 semester of training that works with the music educator and either a music class or school choir in a mentoring-collaborative atmosphere in their school. MET Academy Festival Prep offers music educators and their students an opportunity to sharpen rehearsal and competition skills for participation in choral festivals/auditioned choral adjudication options.
Writing Works!
The commission of new performance repertoire for children/youth choir. Initially using composers from Tennessee, the strategic goal is to expand to national composers keeping in mind that this writing pool should represent the multicultural landscape of our country.
